Jill Biden şi Carmen Iohannis – la Şcoala Gimnazială ‘Uruguay’, care găzduieşte elevi ucraineni refugiaţi

Prima Doamnă a Statelor Unite ale Americii, Jill Biden, şi soţia preşedintelui României, Carmen Iohannis, au discutat, sâmbătă, la Şcoala Gimnazială „Uruguay” din Sectorul 1 al Capitalei, cu mame şi profesoare refugiate din Ucraina.

În cadrul întâlnirii, Jill Biden le-a spus mamelor din Ucraina că sunt uimitoare, având şi cuvinte de laudă la adresa poporului român: „Voi sunteţi eroi!”.

Moderator: – My name is Lydia Deca. I’m a presidential advisor for education and research and it’s really my pleasure to be moderating this this listening session. We’ve heard this morning a lot about what the government and international organizations are doing in this refugee crisis but here we have a very special project and I think you’ve seen the children in the classrooms working together both Romanian and Ukrainian children and this is due to a very successful project which pools resources from the government sector, the private sector and the NGO capacity. And I’m very fortunate to be able to first introduce Mrs. Vidlana Salamatovo who can tell us more about the project in general.

Și sunt foarte norocos să o pot prezenta mai întâi pe doamna Vidlana Salamatovo care ne poate spune mai multe despre proiect în general.

Mrs. Vidlana Salamatovo : – Thank you very much. First of all I want to say that each successful project starts from us and this project started in 2004 in University of Georgia and because I met my husband at that time and we married and he was full prorector and we spent eleven months, beautiful month in US, and I learned a lot from US life, very good things and now I changed my love with America,  we like US and yes, people like Ukraine it’s more successful I think it would happen. But anyway all knowledge I came from the time and after that since 2014,  I joined women leaders in Ukraine and a year ago we established Geopolitical Alliance with women and happened according to war in Ukraine, because my goal was to join women in Europe and to create like belt of peace or strong network of women which can create as much as possible successful projects together. And it happened here also and now I have a UK more than 50 very strong women leaders and they work in local communities and most of them now support our soldiers in Ukraine and…

I’m here fortunately I’m here, because my nephew is here and my family is here because my mom is 79 and she was born during the second world and now I don’t want that that shit you passed away in out of here I do the best of here I can do it. And certainly forced my idea which I came and we came across the world March 8 it’s international women’s day.I got idea and understood very consciously that very fast we should organize here systematical women’s dialogue we should to meet and talk and understand what we can do together. It happened here, we met a childrens’ mum  and she showed us this place for conversation. And after that email of sector one we start to think together and ask how we can use this place the best and we create an idea of score. The second,  March 9 in the morning which I passed the board I met Anna she is my neighbor. I met her and she said that I want to organize education space. Iit was her there initially. Next day we met Bianca she is journalist at Antena 1 and she provided interview and we were publicly declared Romanian TV that we want to see next day.

Local NGO found me and said that we can help you. I want to talk to chain of Heart to heart people’s Network. This project came from our hearts and from our wishes to help each other. It is why it’s successful. Then after human cooperation, we met UNICEF which support us very much and thank you, according to their support we will have stable situation until our women don’t feel afraid to be here in Romania right now. They have free time to adapt it here to Romanian society, because children spend all days here and our goal is to bring happiness and love to our children and they have it right now from us and from all organizations, from.

Also I’m very thankful of system of education ofl Romania because, certainly, according to thank your Minister for support because your office and office of President provided a lot of educational work and it’s very easy to cooperate now and do everything right. And also this place, our project also not only school, we don’t call this school, it’s educational space, because we use this space, also to work with mothers and we talk with them and help and certainly special agency of migration for a wife help. We have conversations with them also they get bought money which came from. And certainly our mother have this financial support also. And I want to say thank you especially, the organization who is the umbrella of this project, because it’s impossible for me to work legally here as a geopolitical women. We found an umbrella organization Regina Maria Social Innovation Foundation. And we work together right now.

And thank you our agents here. And what I want to say at the end, I want to say that I believe in magic and I believe in God. And I want to say that each magic which happened in our life came through the people and this project is a result of this chain of love.

And I believe in women and only here, during this project, I provide a lot of projects to my life. But this project is quite special because only now I understand how important education of space, not educational, eduction of space, not on time of life. Because having this space now, our women have time, have opportunity to organize their life here in Romania or other parts. It may be very important because if online… No. And I want to say that this project is very special because I understood that peace in Ukraine and now it’s hitting in our women’s hands. Our men kept fighting in Ukraine. We are here, and our children and children in this next generation.

But then when I came home came here and the first fear was gone.

But then I saw all these children being literally abandoned because they came with their mothers who were going through hell, from with families, being thrown, with our husband, staying behind us and you are just being thrown out of your life, going nowhere. We didn’t know where we were going. We have no friends, no relatives here. Thank God the Romanian people were here for us and they helped us so much. I think even Romanians didn’t expect that they could be so wonderful because you don’t expect that from people. But then you see these children who are in their phones who are being totally I don’t know spacecatters because they didn’t understand what was going on. I’m a teacher. I can teach, but I can’t came here on the 4 March.

It was too early and nobody cared about education at that point. There were people coming here. They needed to take care of them physically. So I went to the Ministry of Education, to the Embassy of Ukraine and they didn

Totally, I don’t know, space cabbage, because they didn’t understand what was going on. So I realized, okay, I’m a teacher. I can teach. But I came here on the 4 March. It was too early and nobody cared about out education at that point. There were people coming here. They needed to take care of them physically. So I went to the Ministry of Education or to the Embassy of Ukraine and they didn’t have time for me. And I went to other organizations and it was a right. And then I came to go to the North train station and I think I was completely out of my mind because at some point I started to yell, „I’m a teacher. Give me an opportunity to teach for free. I can help.”

Nobody hears me. But there was this guy waiting for a train and he said, okay, stop scaring people. Look, the major of the city is organizing the space for children, go there. And we went there and it was a wonderful space organized by volunteers, with all these toys and furniture. We started right away and we had four students on day 1, 12 students on day two, but 47 on day three. So there was no more space left. And children kept coming and coming and coming. So, I said, okay, and I know the strategy. You scream and somebody will listen. I tried not to be that aggressive. So I managed to find the concept of the Ministry of Education and the volunteer gave it to me. So I call it on Sunday. But I didn’t realize it was Sunday. So I called them and said, okay, can you help us with the classrooms for Ukrainian children? And they said, okay, it’s Sunday, can I help you tomorrow? I said, sure, can I call you in the morning? And the next day he had of the best school in Romania, best high school. They called me and said, we can give you eight classrooms to teach Ukrainians.

We said: We don’t need eight. We will have maximum 80 children. Then we come on Monday and we have 227 children and they’re like, okay. And so, 30 minutes before opening the school and we are running around with the head teacher counting chairs because we’re not sure that they will all be. And now we have 900 children in the waiting list, because they all want education. And you knoe, they’re telling us that our nation does not exist. But you can see the way all these women, all these children are willing to come to Ukrainian schools. The world is open for us now, but what they need is a Ukrainian school. And they’re in a waiting list, waiting for the opportunity to get Ukrainian education. They don’t want to leave this country because they want to stay close to the borders. As soon as it’s safe, we’re going back home and having a wonderful friend now, I think forever Romanian, Romanian people. And I’m sure that when the war is over. we’re back. And then we will open our doors to Romanians. And I mean this will be a whole new chapter of the world history because we can see how the world is united to help us and to support us.

And this is incredible. And I thank not only Romania, but also the US, who is helping us, not only supporting the refugees, but actually in our fight.

– I’m a mother. And I came here on the 1st of March. We were waiting on the border with Romanian, all of our family and we don’t know can we the cross because we want to cross with my husband. We are adoption. We adopt a child. That’s why we have a small opportunity to come here by all of us. And yes, we did it. I’m here with my husband, two boys and a dog. ukrainian. We don’t left anyone from our family. Yes. And we come here. I haven’t been here before. I don’t know Romanian, people, country. I think that it will be for maybe two days. And I will go to my mother in Poland and I’m staying here because I was really shocked and I’m really grateful for your people. They are amazing. I think all of us, Ukrainian was really shocked. We don’t know Romanian people yet. Thank you. By the situation,  I really understand how not different we are. We are the same one. Yes. We have the same history. We have the same heart as I think, because it’s a big pleasure for me to be here and to have such opportunity to be in a country which supports me, supports me and my boys and also our small history about how we meet and how we begin.

We begin from the kindergarten, because I had my kindergarten in Kiev, I am from Kiev, too. And I understand that I cannot be only one with two boys. They are very active and I need to just be free for some 2 hours. And I understand that I need to do it here. And after one week of my tears and stress when I came here, I understand. No, I don’t want to be a victim of this situation. I cannot give them to this country, not to destroy me inside. I want to be a hero and a project of our foundation, plan B, who support our kindergarten here. They asked me to come and to do it with them. And this project is named like „superheroes”.

They called us such and I understand.

Wow. It’s such a sign of the universe. Yes. And this was really the first step for me. And then we decided to make the school and now I help Svetlana and all our team to make here the democratical space. It’s not a school. We don’t call it like it. We want to have educational space, where we can use and build a new model. We don’t take anything from the Soviet Union system. And it’s like really, for kids, it’s freedom in the classroom. I ask to come teachers, not the teachers only, but mums or women who want to speak, to be with the kids in this time, to support them, to become in a new place, to have more opportunity to understand what they can do for themselves, to become more calm, to have more friends, new and so on. And we built this now. We started from 30 kids. I’m looking for my team. I don’t take any teacher because I need to find our friends who will, first of all, to be a friend for kids, not a teacher who will stand and tell them what to do. This is our democratical school. I want to build it here, because in Ukraine it was started before the war, about maybe three or five projects I have known in Kiev that wanted to take to make the democratical system educational one.

That’s why I think it will be the first point to do with this space and to make it bigger and bigger. And when the war stops, we will come back with this experience, new model and new, more freedom kids. That’s why I’m here. And I’m very thank you to come and thank you, your people, very amazing. So when I received that call, somebody told me, you back and you leave. So we went to the basement, but I didn’t feel that it was safe in the basement. I still was scared and afraid. And it was hard to tell where it is safer in the basement or in the apartment. But we stayed in the basement.

So my daughter is eight years old. And I was very scared and very concerned about her, especially when we went to the basement. Because a year ago, my daughter went through a very hard time. She was at the hospital. She had some problems with her, but she was very ill.

So this was a year later. And we went downstairs to the basement, where it was very cold. It was very uncomfortable. And I was very afraid that she might get sick again. And then the disease comes back.

From that time, we would go upstairs because the children were very much afraid. They were not very old, and they were afraid and could not stand the situation. So we were very concerned about their health, about their mental stability. They started crying. They were very disturbed.

And some of them were panicking. And we were not sure what was better. Whether it would be better to stay downstairs in the basement or go upstairs and stay there. Because of their mental stability. We were very, very much concerned.

So we stayed in the basement for about a week and a half. It was very cold, very uncomfortable. We had our heads on jackets, warm jackets, some kind of blankets, all that we can get. We brought downstairs. And we were sleeping on the inflatable bed.

I was very concerned about my daughter’s health. I was afraid that she will get sick again. And I had no opportunity there to help her or to provide any medical assistance or services. So we were very scared that I would have to go back to the hospital, which would be not possible. So for us and for other children, it was really very hard to stay there and remain downstairs in the basement.

So we stayed there for about a week and a half. And after that, we decided that we need to leave the town. And we started to think how to leave the town. So we understood that we got together with some of our friends and decided to live together. And we knew that there were only two routes that would take us out of Hakku to the safety.

And we did not know which one to choose. And we decided to pick one of the two. And took that route out of the city. And we were very happy. And thank God we picked that one because we saw that the other route was shelved by the enemies and they were very in danger.

So we were just purely lucky when we picked the route that we took out of the city.

So for some time when we moved out of left Harpy for some time we stayed in the city of Chernobyl Sea but for my daughter it was not the most comfortable place. She did not feel home there.

I felt that she had a hard time adapting to the situation there and to the new environment. People are there. So because all we did, we stayed in a small room and then would walk outside and then to the room again. So there was not a whole lot of things for the child to stay or to be engaged and I saw that was reflected in her behavior and the way she acted and her attitude. So I was very concerned about her health and therefore later on we came to Romania and this was a game change for us.

This was very important for my daughter. I can tell that she changed a lot. She feels much better here and thanks to Svetlana and her help

We met, and I met Svetlana. I was lucky to meet her, and she helped us with the school and everything. So I see now that the child has changed. No more tears. And she had adapted very nicely here.

Dr. Jill Biden? – Is she healthy now?

Anna: – Thank you very much. Everything is good now.

Dr. Jill Biden: – I can see the smile. I was like.

Așa că am stat la subsol cam o săptămână și jumătate. Era foarte frig, foarte incomod. Aveam capul pe jachete, jachete calduroase, un fel de pături, tot ce putem obține. Am adus jos. Și dormeam pe patul gonflabil.

Eram foarte îngrijorat de sănătatea fiicei mele. Mi-a fost teamă că se va îmbolnăvi din nou. Și nu am avut nicio șansă acolo să o ajut sau să-i ofer asistență sau servicii medicale.
