162 de ani de la deschiderea primului METROU din lume

La 6 septembrie 1863, la Londra, a fost inaugurat primul metrou din lume, desfășurat pe o distanță de 6,3 km de-a lungul Victoria Street. Trenurile erau acționate de locomotive cu aburi, iar proiectul a fost supervizat de inginerul Charles Pearson.

Conform relatărilor din acea perioadă, aproape 30.000 de pasageri erau transportați zilnic, trenurile având o frecvență de plecare la fiecare zece minute. Această inovație părea să fie soluția salvatoare pentru decongestionarea traficului din centrul Londrei, un oraș cu puțin peste 2 milioane de locuitori la acea vreme.
Modelul metroului londonez a fost rapid adoptat de alte orașe europene. În 1896, Budapesta a inaugurat prima linie subterană de pe continent, urmată de Viena în 1898, cu o nouă linie de metrou.
Astăzi, metroul londonez transportă zilnic peste trei milioane de pasageri și depășește un miliard de călători anual. Rețeaua include 412 scări rulante și 112 ascensoare, funcționând neîntrerupt. Cunoscut popular sub numele de „The Tube”, metroul londonez este nu doar un sistem de transport esențial, ci și un simbol istoric și o atracție turistică în sine.
