8 ianuarie 1889 – Herman Hollerith a patentat prima mașină de calculat

Herman Hollerith (n. 29 februarie 1860, Buffalo, New York – d. 17 noiembrie 1929, Washington, D.C.) a fost un statistician și inventator american, cunoscut pentru dezvoltarea unui tabulator mecanic care utiliza cartele perforate pentru a procesa rapid și eficient statistici din milioane de date. Acest dispozitiv revoluționar a fost utilizat pentru recensământul populației din Statele Unite din 1890. Hollerith este considerat părintele calculului automat modern și a fost unul dintre cei mai importanți pionieri în domeniul procesării datelor.
