Dan Ravaru s-a născut pe 3 aprilie 1941 la Bârlad. Provenea dintr-o veche familie românească, având rădăcini de peste 300 de ani în județele Prahova și Neamț. Studiile gimnaziale și liceale le-a urmat la Predeal și Bârlad.
