Arnold Sommerfeld, fizician și matematician german

Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld (n. 5 decembrie 1868, Königsberg, Prusia – d. 26 aprilie 1951, München, RFG) a fost un fizician și matematician german de renume, profesor la Universitatea din München.

Sommerfeld a elaborat o teorie a giroscopului, a adus contribuții esențiale la dezvoltarea mecanicii cuantice și a extins modelul atomic propus de Niels Bohr. Studiind liniile spectrale dintr-o perspectivă cuantică, a introdus două numere cuantice suplimentare: numărul azimutal și cel magnetic. De asemenea, i se datorează introducerea constantei structurii fine.
